So back to the brown rice with peas. The recipe called for onions, red peppers, brown rice, chicken stock and of course some spices. Then at the end you are suppose to put the fish and frozen peas into the crock pot. Well, once I put the peas in, I noticed it was cooking rather fast, so my husband was never going to be home in time to throw the chicken in there (my replacement for the fish). Oh well. Next time!
Little Miss asked for cheese on it. Always with the cheese. So I put some on it, she took a bite and ate it, but told me she didn't like the peas. Could she take them out. I told her eat around them.
The Boy.....not a lover of the dish. He ended up eating cereal instead. After Little Miss finished and said she was still hungry, I asked if she wanted more rice - she promptly told me no, too hard to eat around the peas, "I want Cinnamon." Translation: Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
She then told me I should ask Grandpa to make his orange rice (which is white rice with saffron in it, some onions and stuff). I told her "thanks." I asked if she would want to put corn in the rice next time, instead of peas. She thought about it and said "That would be a great idea, Ma-ma."
As for The Boy.....he's not eating it with anything this time around. But he did try it, that's all I can ask for.
And the end of the meal went like this....FUNNY FACES. At least I know I didn't scar them for life with my attempt at home cooking brown rice and peas!

It took a while for my kids to get used to the switch to brown rice. For a few MONTHS, they hardly touched it, but with persistence, they eventually came around at their own pace. Papa, however, still does not like it and will go without any rice, or when he cooks, he makes parboiled. I know right? Bad example! But its kinda funny that the kids lecture him about it when he does that! ;)
ReplyDeleteOh, I meant to add that making brown basmati rice seemed to help - I think our family prefers that basmati texture over the regular grain. Maybe try that?
ReplyDeleteI think if I put some saffron in it, or this stuff my dad uses that turns it orange, she'll like it a lot more. But I'll look into the other one, too!! Thanks.
