My daughter poses for things as if she thinks she is a supermodel. I am not sure where this comes from. Maybe too much iCarly and True Jackson, VP? But every time it reminds me of when we took her to Orlando, Florida to have a photo shoot done for the cover of my husband's cousin's magazine (which she no longer owns, but in 2008, she did).
This was the January before I was even pregnant with our son. I was not really "for this" and I got talked into it because my husband really wanted to give it a try. So after months of it being brought up and then at Thanksgiving when his cousin visited (she spends every Thanksgiving in New York with the family for a week, but lives in Orlando, Florida). She offered to buy the plane tickets and for us to stay at her home in Orlando. It was totally orchestrated I am sure, to make me feel totally weak and I said fine, we'll do it.
I requested the time off from work, we had flights down on a Thursday night after work from the local airport here. I packed only carryons, since we would only be staying until Saturday evening. Should have done a longer trip, but my job SUCKED BUTT and I could not take more time off. My stuff and Little Miss shared a suitcase, diapers packed in there and all! My husband had his carryon with all her stuff she needed to entertain her, feed her and keep her quiet! We got an inexpensive stroller for the trip and off we went.
It amazed me how great she was on the flight.....the plane was packed going there and coming home, the person who got "stuck" next to us on each leg of the trip's first thought was probably "CRAP, I have to sit next to this family with a one year old, GREAT." But she was really a good girl. Surprising for a baby of that age.
It sort of kept my focus off of flying, which I HATE to do. I am not a good flyer. I was when I was younger, but once the kid came along, forget it. I'm a basket case. But I sucked it up and did it because that's what my husband really wanted to do.
We got there late, drove to my husband's cousin's house and got settled in. The next morning, we were up early, Little Miss was grumpy (which I would have expected) and the photos were to be done in a few hours. We went over to the studio and everything was fine, it was going well, she was doing pretty good and then the unthinkable. The photographer tried to pick her up to put her on a seat.........forget it. Total meltdown and would not cooperate at all. The pix came out bad because she was tired, bloated and not very happy. Oh well, what can you do? 20/20 hindsight told me we should have gone down a day earlier.
We packed it in, headed back to Nick's cousin's house. It was a gorgeous day out. We enjoyed it.
Of course, this is the short version. I won't go into the crying, the clinging to mommy, the running away and the toys we pulled out to try and salvage this whole experience at the photographers! Now I find it funny, but I was kind of stressed at the time.
This always comes to mind when my daughter decides that she wants her picture taken and does her little poses and then my husband chimes in after seeing the photos and says "We should get her into modeling and commercials." I just laugh, tell him "Do you remember Orlando? And that she is the shyest child on the planet?"
Oh well, she'll just have to settle for being a regular little girl, on regular Long Island and roll her eyes when we tell that story to everyone as she gets older! LOL.
